How To Use Min Function In Excel

How to Use the MIN Role of Excel

What is the smallest number in these 2 columns? In a particular cell range? We often want this information calculated for us and at that place is an Excel role that will do just that!

This Keynote Back up tutorial teaches the MIN function of Microsoft Excel. We testify the office syntax and worksheet examples. A related function is the MAX function.

The MIN Function

The MIN office determines the smallest value from the range specified in the arguments.. The syntax of the MIN office is:

MIN(number1, number2, ... )

Where:

►   where number1, number2, etc. are from 1 to 255 arguments, which can contain cell references, formulas, or functions that resolve to numeric values.

Study the sample spreadsheet below. The data has been entered into columns A and B. Column C contains the actual functions, and the text of the functions follow in column D.

Examples of the MIN Part

Excel worksheet example showing 3 formulas using the MIN function

Case 1:  =MIN(A1:B5) — This Excel function determines the smallest value among the cell range of A1 to B5. Excel returns a value of 20 (jail cell A4).

Example 2:  =MIN(B1:B5,100) — The arguments in this MIN office include a jail cell range and a number. The office determines the smallest value among cells B1 through B5, and the number 100. Excel returns a value of 65 (cell B4).

Example 3:  =MIN(A1:B5,x) — This Excel part determines the smallest value amid the cell range A1:B5, and the number x. Excel returns a value of ten.

Example 4:  =MIN(A1,B1,A5,B5) — This Excel function determines the smallest value amidst the four individual cells listed, and returns a value of 89 (cell B5).

MIN Function with Assortment

Other functions can be embedded within the MIN role. In our spreadsheet below, we want to know which Unit # has the lowest sales.

We don't have a column with the sales amount (Units Sold x Price per Unit). We want the MIN part to calculate the sales amount and then figure the minimum using an array formula.

Excel worksheet example showing an array formula with the MIN function

In cell B7 we typed the formula =MIN(C2:C5*D2:D5) and pressed CTRL+Shift+Enter instead of the Enter key. As you see in the formula bar, Excel wrapped the formula in curly brackets indicating an assortment formula: {=MIN(C2:C5*D2:D5)}

This assortment formula finds the products of the respective numbers in the two cell ranges, C2:C5 and D2:D5, and then finds the minimum. The sales amounts are: Unit #200 = $150, Unit of measurement #201 = $100, Unit #202 = $60, and Unit #203 = $100. Unit #202 wins with sales of $60.

We could have entered the formula the long way: =MIN(C2*D2,C3*D3,C4*D4,C5*D5), only it is good to know how to enter array formulas because specifying each multiplication when working with long columns of data is impractical!

If you lot modify the array formula, you lot must press CTRL+Shift+Enter again. Run across our tutorial the SUMPRODUCT function for a detailed caption of how to employ arrays in Excel.

We hope you've enjoyed our tutorial on the MIN function of Microsoft Excel. Thanks!
